The Dalles is one of the best spring time riding secrets in the Northwest. Moderate marine air flowing inland from the coast, coupled with being just on the other side of the Cascade Mountain Range rain shadow, it’s your best bet for sun and warm temps from March through May each year. Surrounding The Dalles are hundreds of miles of gravel farm roads with little to no motor traffic on them.

The course offers great views of the Gorge and surrounding Cascade Mountain peaks as well as an assortment of old school buildings, barns, and houses from the late 1800’s. Rolling bright green wheat fields dominate the landscape in all directions.

Gran Fondo is Italian and translates approximately to “Big Ride.” Gran Fondo rides have their origin in Italy and France, where the general public was invited to ride a single stage of one of the professional grand tours, the Tour de France, and the Giro D'Italia after the pro race went through. Everyone, of any age and ability, was invited to participate. Ex-professionals and elite racers lined up side by side with 80-year-old farmers toting baguettes in the baskets of their 1920’s era commuter bikes. Family members lined the route and handed out food and water bottles. While some choose to ride fast and test their endurance, by definition, a Gran Fondo is not a race, but rather a mass start event designed to draw the community together and give everyone a chance to enjoy the fun of riding a bike on the same course as the pros.

Race Across Oregon was founded in 1998 when the cancellation of Alaska's Midnight Sun 600k left a gap in my racing calendar.  I challenged a 5 rider relay team to race me from Idaho to the coast.  The "race" became a fundraiser for the Epilepsy Foundation of Oregon and made the front page of The Oregonian newspaper.  When a reporter asked me the name of the event, I fumbled around and said the first thing that came to mind "Race Across Oregon"...  We raised a lot of money for the foundation and decided to make RAO an annual event.
